The Kerala government has launched several schemes to ensure the rehabilitation and social security of non-resident Keralites (NRKs).  One of such schemes is SANTHWANA, which aims to provide financial assistance to NRKs who have returned after at least 2 years of working abroad and whose annual income is below Rs. 1,00,000. This financial assistance is made available from the minister’s disaster relief fund to help returnees meet his medical treatment expenses or that of the dependant family members, as death assistance, for the marriage of daughters and to buy any aids to overcome the physical disability such as artificial limbs, wheelchairs, crutches, etc.

Another scheme is to offer financial assistance to deserving NRKs or family members of the NRKs from the chairman’s fund to meet funeral and medical expenses. There is another major scheme called Karunyam, which is intended to provide financial assistance to legal heirs of NRKs for repatriation of dead bodies of NRKs from abroad and within India. In addition, the government of Kerala also launched a project called Pravasi Legal Aid Cell to render free legal aid to NRKs in various countries, especially in the Middle East for employment issues, filing cases, compensation, and mercy petitions.
